- Give praise. This is the most economical but often overlooked means. When your stars do the right thing, thank them and praise them.
- Challenge. Give your top people the opportunity to take on new projects, train them in them, and shine.
- Give development opportunities. Find low-cost ways for your stars to deepen their abilities, such as training other employees.
- Give non-monetary incentives. Most star employees care more about non-material incentives and are easy to give to companies, such as flexible working hours or more authorization.
